WELCOME TO THE FANTASTIC FOURTH GRADE!

HOORAY! We had a FANTASTIC first day of school. I am delighted to be working with many of my former second graders AND to have three wonderful new students in our class. We spent most of our day getting our supplies organized, practicing our classroom procedures, reviewing our classroom and school rules, "getting into the swing of things", and did a bit of work on our superhero project. I gave a small homework assignment. The students have a questionnaire to complete by tomorrow. There is also an assignment for you, the parents. It is a short questionnaire that will help me understand how to best meet your child's needs in our classroom. Please return this survey by Friday of this week. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions that you have to help make this year a fantastic one for your child. My school number is 864-0299, ext. 247. My school email is tpress@torahacademy.org. I check these messages several times during the day. I look forward to seeing you at our lower school open house next Wednesday evening!

Shalom!

Count Down to Pesach Break...5..4..3..2..1..

We are counting the days until Pesach break - and are very aware of the enormous amount of things we need to accomplish before Friday's Model Seders. First of all, our class business - Heaven in the 4th Dimension - has to secure a "business loan" to provide the start-up costs for our business. The CEOs, the Vice Presidents, the Financial Directors, and the Research and Development director have been working very hard to create this business loan proposal. They will present it to Mrs. Sapp this week. Wish us luck!

The packaging and design team has created an AWESOME logo for our company and have designed some snazzy gift bags for our merchandise. The product development team for our ice cream division has created 4 DELICIOUS flavors (2 dariy - Cholov Yisroel, 2 pareve) and are working on the top secret recipes for each. The product development team for our apron division have created 2 beautiful designs - one for dairy, and one for pareve, and are experimenting with painting and printing techniques. The marketing and Advertising department have been hard at work! They have planned an AMAZING advertising campaign, complete with posters, fliers, poems, commercial jingles, and a power-point marketing presentation. I am so proud of our class!

In reading - we will finish the book The Whipping Boy. We will not have a spelling/vocabulary test this week. In math - we will review the basics of division. PLEASE review these at home. After Pesach break, we will tackle the challenging concept of long division. Knowing the basics will make this new concept much easier for all involved. In science - we will continue to learn about the circulatory system. We will learn a snappy little song that will teach us the process by which blood travels through the heart. Before you know it, you will be singing it , too. (sorry....)

We will also have a little talk about manners. Spring fever has hit our class hard. There have been temper tantrums, teasing, whining, arguing, contagious silliness, endless chatter, and general melt-downs. We will discuss ways to manage our emotions and stress, and learn how to peacefully, kindly, and politely resolve conflicts and differences.

Oh, it will be quite a week!

Projected Homework:

Monday: Reading: Finish questions for ch 17-18, The Whipping Boy

It's the Last Week of February...Have You Planned Your Purim Costume?

February has been a short, but very hectic, month. We are staring a big project for Ohio's 207th birthday, are finishing chapter 10 in Math, creating a muscle model, learning more about adjectives, and continuing with all the amazing day-to-day discoveries. (We have a HUGE herd of deer that travel through the school woods. We're also noticing that many of the hibernating forest denizens are waking up and roaming around.)

Flu season is particularly nasty this year. I hope that you and your children stay well, and if your experiencing this miserable virus in your family - I hope that you all recover soon. I am disinfecting the classroom surfaces daily - but somehow the germs keep multiplying.

I hope that you are enjoying our snow day vacation. If we are in school tomorrow (Fri. Jan. 30), we WILL have the science quiz and the spelling/vocab. quiz. If the kids are bored and driving you crazy....here are a few excellent extra credit project ideas:

Short Story/ Creative writing: Write a story - topic of your choice - just enjoy the process of creating a story.

Math: practice your measuring skills: bake or cook something (with parental supervision)
This would be a great time to practice multiplication/division flash cards!!

Find out some neat facts about the state of Ohio. Make a list of these facts.

Science: Study for the quiz.
Our next unit will be about weathering and erosion - find out how trees help prevent soil erosion, investigate the effects of snow, ice and rock salt on the soil/roads and land...

Reading: read something that you enjoy

Build Something! Is this good "packing snow"? Make a snow sculpture contest - take photos of your creations. Try to build an igloo or snow fort.

Do a Mitzvah - Help with the snow shoveling, help someone dig out his/her car, help Mom and Dad with the housework, read a story to your younger siblings, give lots of hugs...help with the Shabbat preparations

I hope that you have a very enjoyable snow day. Maybe we will be in school tomorrow.
