I am so proud of our Fabulous Fifth, Spectacular Sixth, and Fantastic Fourth Graders. They all did a wonderful job following the directions, rules, and procedures of the science lab. They all did a great job conducting the science investigations, making observations, and recording the data.

...and Fabulous Fifth, and Spectacular Sixth Grade! This year I am pleased to be teaching fourth grade general studies and fifth and sixth grade science. We are going to have a fantastic, fabulous, spectacular school year!

My classroom blog will contain homework assignments for the school week - FOR ALL CLASSES. The fifth and sixth grade science assignment will be labeled and listed, as will the fourth grade general studies homework assignments. The students will also be responsible for recording their homework assignments in their planners. I will check to make sure that they do so.

We had an amazing first day of school! My goodness, everyone has gotten taller (except for me...I just buy very tall shoes...) I have given a "sort of" homework assignment for my Fantastic Fourth Graders. The are to show their copy of the classroom code to their parents, have their parents sign the cover of it, and return it to school tomorrow.

Also - I have told the students that they may bring WATER bottles to school (flavored water, like Crystal Light, is fine, just no juice, milk, or soda in the classroom). Students may take drinks from their water bottles, but aren't allowed to leave my classroom for a drink. They may use the drinking fountain before/after lunch and recess. This way we can use every precious minute for learning!

I am so excited to be working with such a wonderful group of students! Welcome to our school year!

6 1/2 DAYS!!!!!

Yes, that is all that remains for our school year. These will be very busy days. There is no scheduled homework. Assignments will only be given if we are unable to finish our activities during class time. We are going on a field trip to COSI this Friday. We will have our class "End of the Year" party on Tuesday, June 7 - which is a 2:00 dismissal day for Erev Shavuot. Our last day, Friday June 10, is a 12:00 dismissal. We will have an awards assembly that morning. THE STUDENTS WILL BE CLEANING OUT THEIR DESKS AND LOCKERS ON TUESDAY, JUNE 7. ALL PERSONAL ITEMS MUST BE TAKEN HOME BY FRIDAY, JUNE 10. ANY REMAINING ITEMS WILL BE THROWN OUT. Please let me know of any planned vacation/absences that will occur during our last school days. Thank you!

Yes, this is the last 5-day week of our school year. We have many special events this week as well. Wednesday morning, at 10:00, we will attend the 5th grade Underground Railroad play performance. We will be performing in the Spring Show Thursday morning at 10:00. The rest of the day Thursday will be filled with Field Day/Color War games and activities. We will have the chapter 12 math test on Friday. This will be the last math test of the year. We will have the last spelling/vocabulary test (unit 15) on Friday as well.

Achievement Test Week!

Hooray! We are taking the Reading Achievement Test on Tuesday, May 3. We will take the Math Achievement Test on Thursday, May 5. The Fabulous Fifth Grade will take the Science Achievement Test on Wednesday, May 4. The homework for this week: I am giving practice tests. The reading and math practice tests (for 4th grade) are due on Friday. The science practice test (for 5th grade) is due on Friday. These practice tests are to help the students prepare for the achievement tests. I don't expect the students to complete an entire practice test in one night, which is why the practice tests are due on Friday.

It is very important that your child is well-rested and well-nourished for the achievement tests.

It's spring! Soon we will have pretty flowers and warm, sunny days all in a row. This is a big week. The third quarter of the school year ends this Friday. We will also return to a 4:00 Friday dismissal schedule. It is hard to believe that we are this far along in the school year. We have a project to finish and a big social studies test to prepare for. Rosh Chodesh Adar 2, Blood Drive, Iditarod, and More!

Today we are celebrating Rosh Chodesh Adar 2 by wearing hats and eating Hamentachen. Tomorrow we will present a wonderful bulletin board for the CTA Blood Drive. (Be sure to make an appointment to donate blood.) On Friday, we will cheer on the first grade class as they compete in the annual CTA First Grade Iditarod. In the meantime, we will review decimals and fractions, study the circulatory system, review the use of prefixes, learn how to write a research paper, and study Ohio's history from WWI to WWII.

This is going to be a very busy week for the Fantastic Fourth Grade! We will have our Powwow on Tuesday afternoon from 2-3pm. We have the lower-school Thanksgiving Show on Wednesday morning. We will be very busy preparing for the Powwow and practicing for the show. The only planed homework will be to practice the short explanations they've written for the Thanksgiving show presentation. They should practice these on Tuesday evening. They will be able to have their index cards of information on stage - so there is no need to memorize the information.

I'm so proud of my students for behaving so well during such a chaotic week and am very thankful for all of the help from Mrs. Coyne, Mrs. Schramm, Mrs. Willis, Mrs. Cahill, Mrs. Buster, Mrs. Stock, Mrs, Sapp and all the other teachers and faculty members who have helped my class and students this week.

As for schoolwork - I'm going to change the due date for the Native American Project Trio. These projects will be due on FRIDAY, NOV. 12. This way I can help with questions and things all next week. Also - I realize that Thursday is a big night for candy in some neighborhoods, so - study and do your best on the spelling and vocabulary tests - but do not stress about the grade. I'm just going to correct it and see how you do. We will also be able to start some of our fun projects and science experiments next week as well. I really miss my students!!! Thank you for the lovely and thoughtful cards. They have really helped to cheer me up and make me feel better!!!

FANTASTIC FOURTH GRADE SCIENCE INVESTIGATION!!!

This is a nifty little science investigation that you can do at home with items found in the kitchen! You can earn EXTRA CREDIT for conducting this investigation IF you follow the directions, record your process,observations, and conclusions, and turn in the lab report by Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Directions:

1. ASK YOUR PARENTS IF YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO THIS INVESTIGATION. ASK IF YOU ARE ALLOWED TO USE THE ITEMS AND MATERIALS YOU NEED FOR THIS INVESTIGATION. CLEAN UP THE MESS YOU MAKE.

2. You will need these items:
paper and pencil (to record materials list, observations, and conclusions)
a clear glass or plastic container
3 different liquids (some good ones to use: milk, chocolate syrup, honey, soda, cooking oil, vinegar, juice, liquid soap, mustard, ketchup, maple syrup, cream)

3. You will need to choose 3 different liquids. Label them (example: liquid #1, milk; liquid #2, chocolate syrup; liquid #3, soda

4. Make a hypothesis: Which liquid do you think will have the greatest density? Why? Which liquid do you think will have the least density? Why? Record your hypothesis.

Just a few more days (8 1/2 as of today) until this school year is over. I am happy to tell you that this is THE LAST WEEK FOR HOMEWORK! The Fantastic Fourth Grade - Is, Indeed, FANTASTIC!!

As you know, we had a very big field trip today to Camp Oty Okwa in Hocking Hills. We hiked, we participated in team-building activities, and we enjoyed a beautiful day outside. I am so very proud of the Fourth Grade! Several of the camp staff told me how impressed they were with our students' polite and respectful behavior. The hiking guide told me that they were "awesome" as they were so interested in all of the things we saw on the hike, followed directions so well, and were able to identify plants, insects, and different types of sedimentary rocks. The leaders of the team-building activities told me that they had never seem a group take to solving problems together so naturally and easily - that they displayed such respect towards each other in problem solving and listening to each other. This makes me so happy in my heart - be very proud as parents - you are raising such wonderful, amazing children. I feel so very blessed to be their teacher!

This is the last "normal" 5-day week of the school year...oh - and we have a field trip...

We will start a new grammar unit. We will learn about chemical changes in matter and continue to study the central nervous system. We will continue to learn about state and local government. OHHH - and we have a really big field trip on THURSDAY!!

Please make sure that your child arrives to school BY 8:20 am THURSDAY MORNING. We will leave for the field trip promptly at 8:30. Please make sure that your child brings a change of shoes and socks, rain gear, and a fully disposable lunch. Also, please have your child put on sunscreen. We will be outside all day. Achievement Test Week...Hooray!

It's the week we've all been waiting for! We are taking the reading and math achievement tests. The reading test will be given Monday, April 19. The math achievement test will be given Wednesday, April 21. Please make sure that your child arrives to school well-rested, well-fed, and on time. the testing will begin at 9:00 and end at 11:30.

In other exciting news - we are running a class business. Our new company - Supplyland - will design, make and market crayons, sidewalk chalk, and decorative pencils. Tada! The blog for this week is short and sweet. The homework for tonight is to complete the science worksheet and to complete the math worksheet. There will be no Friday Folders or newsletters this week - expect a special double-issue next Thursday. Next week, during Succot, there will be no homework! Hooray! I hope that you had a wonderful Rosh Hashannah. We have quite a busy week. We are learning about the water cycle and how it affects weather, have begun math chapter 3, are continuing our analysis of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are studying the unit 2 words in the orange vocabulary books, and are beginning to study the geography of Ohio. The Last Week of the Year...

Here we are - the last week of 5769 - and it will be a busy one. We are starting the vocabulary book. Our spelling and vocabulary words for the week will be the words for unit 1. The spelling/vocabulary tests will be given on Friday. We will also have the chapter 2 math test on Friday. We will have a science quiz on Tuesday. The 5th grade math group will have their chapter 2 math test on Thursday. IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT ON FRIDAY DUE TO PLANNED FAMILY TRAVEL/VISITING FOR YOM TOV, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Thank you.

Here is the projected homework schedule for this week. All assignments are due THE NEXT SCHOOL DAY unless otherwise specified. If the homework is not turned in, your child will receive a LATE LETTER and MUST turn in the assignment and late letter with a parent's signature. For every 4 late letters earned in a grading period, your child will have to serve an after-school study hall/detention. Please check your child's planner to confirm the nightly assignments.
